Our Commitment to Sustainability
Our internal goal of creating earth-friendly packaging to replace the traditional plastic vitamin bottles we currently use became our priority since seeing our home province of British Columbia affected by record-breaking heat waves, floods, and fires.
We now offer our products in pouches made from 100% compostable, plant-based ingredients, which will help us divert over 300,000 plastic bottles (10 tons of plastic) from ending up in landfills each year. Currently, we have almost transitioned all our products to our new earth-friendly packaging, and we hope to inspire other companies to do the same!
What are our new compostable pouches made from?
Our compostable pouches are made from sustainably sourced plant-based ingredients including wood pulp, cornstarch, cassava, sugarcane, and beets. All of the components of our pouches, including the zipper, conform to the OK compost HOME certification and will fully break down into organic materials rather than microplastics. We are in the process of certifying our pouch through BPI, the North American certification standard for compostable plastics!
How do I compost my Herbaland pouch?
To compost our plant-based pouches, cut up the bag into small pieces and place it in your backyard compost bin or your community compost bin. Make sure to check your city regulations before placing these pouches in your home green bin, since compostable plastics are relatively new to the market and the material is not yet accepted at many industrial composting facilities! Herbaland’s compostable packaging is also Lomi Approved™. Our pouches are able to be placed in:

• Bokashi bins
• Worm farms
• Community gardens
• Lomi Machine
How much plastic will I divert from landfills by purchasing vitamins in compostable pouches?
Since each of our plastic vitamin bottles contain around 32 grams of plastic, you will be able to divert 1.2 kgs (2.6 lbs) of plastic from landfills per year, if you purchase three of our compostable pouches per month. That might seem like a small amount, but if we all work together to make everyday earth-conscious choices we can make a big difference for the health of our planet!
How does composting work?
Composting is the degredation of organic material (such as food scraps, yard trimmings, and leaves) to create nutrient rich soil. In order for organic material to be composted, there needs to be sufficient air, moisture, and sunlight (or warmth). These conditions create an ideal habitat for insects, funghi, and bacteria that consume the material over time to produce a more simple and nutrient dense soil. After all of the material has been fully composted, the soil can be used to fertilize your garden and to add nutrients that support the growth of new plants.
Can I place my pouch in the recycle bin or regular garbage?
No, we do not recommend placing our compostable pouches in the recycle bin or regular garbage. Recycling facilities do not accept compostable materials so placing compostable plastics in your recycling might lead to potential delays and contamination for the plastic that can be recycled. We also don't recommend placing your pouch in your everyday garbage since organic materials need air, moisture, and sunlight to fully decompose - something that is difficult to get in a landfill!
What's the difference between compostable and biodegradable?
Compostable and biodegradable materials are similar in that they can both break down in a compost environment. However, compostable materials will break down into organic materials that can be used to foster the growth of new plants, whereas something considered biodegradable doesn't have to break down into organic materials. This means that plastics that eventually break down into microplastics are considered biodegradable. This is why it is important to know the difference between the two when purchasing a product that might seem "green". Our pouches are made from 100% compostable materials, which means they won't leave any microplastics in the environment after they are disposed of.
What are microplastics?
Microplastics are the smallest fragments of plastic left over after plastic has been broken down. They are smaller than 5mm in length and are not biodegradable, which means they end up being ingested by small aquatic creatures. The microplastics are not digestible which means they make their way up the food chain to us. Minimizing microplastics in the environment is an important step towards protecting our health and the health of our planet!
What's the difference between industrial composting and home composting?
An industrial composting facility is the place where waste from your green bin ends up. It is a high tech facility where compost material is heated and aerated, which accelerates the composting process. The home composting process happens in a backyard compost bin and is generally slower, especially in colder climates. The materials in our new pouches are certified for home composting, which means that they will fully break down in a home compost environment. Once we are granted a BPI certification, our pouches will be accepted BPI industrial composting facilities across North America.
